Finding the Right Midwife: A Guide to Matching Your Birth Vision with the Ideal Care Provider

Curious about homebirth and considering hiring a midwife for your journey? It can feel overwhelming but you're in the right place! Choosing the right health care provider for YOU is one of the most important decisions you'll make during your pregnancy. It's not just about finding a qualified professional, but about finding that magical blend of philosophy, approach, and personality who resonate with your own vision for childbirth. It is always helpful to bring your partner with you to these interviews so that they can meet the midwives and ask their questions as well.

When should you start looking for a midwife?

Is there such a thing as too early? We don’t think so! Even if you’re not pregnant yet, many midwives offer consultations or preconception counseling. Already pregnant? It’s wise to jump on the midwife bandwagon as soon as you can. Starting early means we get to build our relationship from the ground up, setting the stage for a supported and smooth journey together. Also most midwives take a certain amount of clients per month and tend to book up quickly. Starting the interview process early on allows you to have more options to choose from and can secure that golden spot on their calendar.

And here’s a little midwifery secret: switching to a midwife is always an option, no matter how far along you are! If you’re feeling uneasy about your current care, don't ignore that nudge from your intuition as that inner voice is telling you something important. Listen to it! At our practice, we're flexible and depending on how busy we are, we do our best to make space to welcome new clients, even those who are nearing their due date. So, whether you’re just starting to think about babies or you’re about to meet yours, exploring your midwifery options is always a good idea!

Why Interview Several Midwives?

Every midwife has their own unique sparkle. They come with their own set of skills, practices, personality, and even coffee preferences. This isn't just about getting a feel for who's out there; it’s about ensuring you find someone who clicks with YOU. Interviewing several midwives allows you to compare and contrast these qualities, ensuring you find someone who not only meets your health care needs but also connects with you on a personal level. Just like a first date, your midwife is getting to know you too. It’s all about ensuring our expectations match up so that everyone feels safe and supported and we can make the collaborative decision to move forward together.

Preparing for the Interview

Before you dive into these meet-and-greets, prep yourself with a list of top notch questions. You want to cover all the bases to make sure nothing important is overlooked. Here are some starters to get the ball rolling:

  1. What is your philosophy on childbirth and midwifery care?

  2. Can you describe your qualifications and experience?

  3. How do you handle complications during labor?

  4. What tests and procedures do you perform during pregnancy?

  5. What type of prenatal and postpartum support do you offer?

  6. What is included in your fees?

  7. What are your thoughts on family involvement during prenatal care and birth?

  8. What has been your most challenging birth experience, and how did you handle it?

  9. In case of an emergency, illness, or two births at the same time, how do you plan for backup support and who would that person be?

  10. What supplies do you bring to the birth?

  11. How many assistants will be at the birth?

  12. What circumstances would require a transfer during pregnancy or birth and what would that scenario look like?

  13. What types of pharmaceuticals and natural remedies do you use in your practice?

  14. Can you provide references from previous clients?

During the Interview

While discussing these questions, pay attention physically and emotionally to how you feel when talking with the midwife. Do you feel heard and respected? Do you click? Does it feel like a chat with an old friend? Trust your instincts—your comfort and confidence with them are paramount.

After the Interviews

After your interviews, don't rush into a decision. Sit down with a cup of tea and review your notes as it’s important to take some time to reflect on each interaction. When you close your eyes, who do you see at your birth? Which midwife made you feel most at ease? Discuss the conversations with your partner or a trusted friend to help clarify your feelings and thoughts. Remember, the right midwife for you is someone who not only provides expert care but also supports and empowers your preferences throughout your journey.

Most midwives will follow up after your interview to address any further questions you might have. In our practice, we appreciate hearing from you within two weeks regarding whether you'd like to proceed with our services or if you've decided on another provider. This helps us manage availability and potentially offer your spot to another interested client.

Most importantly - choosing a midwife is a deeply personal decision, and by taking the time to thoroughly interview potential candidates, you empower yourself to make the best choice for your unique needs and birth plan. You will know when the shoe fits. Trust in yourself—you always have the insight and intuition to know what is best for you and your baby.
